SINGLE REVIEW: Athena Joy | I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love

When Athena Joy hit the country with her single ‘Blue’ last year we knew great things were to come. After being announced as a finalist in the Queensland Music Awards for ‘Blue’, receiving Triple J airplay and performing steadily over these last months she’s back with new single ‘I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love’, a brooding yet haunting showcase of the emotions involved in relationships. The track is just a sample of whats to come with an EP on the way, and it has us excited for what’s to come.

The song starts slow and simple, drawing you in with its melancholy guitars and Athena’s soft, delicate voice. You can hear the emotion behind every word as she lays her heart bear in this track. Slowly the other instrumentation comes in filling out the track but remains appropriately restraint.

As the song continues the story of the turmoil of love the beat picks up and becomes more driving. The chorus and bridge explodes out of the simpler moody verse prior, with Athena’s vocals giving us of some serious Kate Miller-Heidke vibes as she takes us to another lever with her ethereal melodies that feel a little operatic.

The track is a more mature and aware single for Athena Joy, showcasing how much an artist can grow over the course of a year. Oozing with pop sensibility and her unique vocal style she has create something familiar, just different enough to prick anyone’s ears and make them listen. This song is the anthem for those scared to love, but have already fallen.
