REVIEW: The Bottlers, Fox N Firkin, The Dangerous Folk @ The Bearded Lady 24th Feb

The Bottlers kicked off their self titled EP Tour at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane on Saturday night and what a gig to kick it off with! The Bearded Lady is a smallish venue but still managed to pack in a big crowd of folk punk fans to enjoy the fun. With its small stage, great sound, cheap drinks and friendly vibe, The Bearded lady hosted a great night of Folk/ Celtic/ Punk Rock music.

Brisbane band, The Dangerous Folk started us off for the night. I take my hat off to the guys as they had to find a drummer to stand in at the last minute and still managed to play a tight set and get everyone jumping and enjoying themselves. The guys have been playing gigs around Brisbane for the last year and are currently recruiting new members. They will be recording a 4 track EP in June, with it to be released hopefully in August this year.

Next up were my favourite local Celtic Punk Rockers, Fox N Firkin. With Robbie playing his first gig since breaking his wrist on their last tour, it was great to see him hitting those drums again and no longer having to play one handed Def Leopard style. The guys played a great set and really got the crowd pumping with their awesome tunes and energy on stage. Lots of crowd interaction with one fan even getting up on stage and taking his clothes off! It certainly was a fun set. They played a mix of all their greatest songs and finished up with my personal favourite, Drink The Lot. The guys are currently working on a new album which I am super pumped for and if you don’t already own their album No Vacancy then you should totally go buy it now. The band’s EP’s Roppongi and To Hell and Back are being re-released on their label, Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records and will be in stores on March 2nd. Fox N Firkin are always a good time and you can catch them again on March 17th for The Paddy’s Day Bash at Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall.

The Bottlers are a nine piece Folk Punk band from Sydney that have been pumping out their acoustic, hard hitting, fun and heartfelt tunes for 3 years now. Signed to The Cutthroat Folk label, the band have just released their first EP. I am so glad they decided to start their EP Tour in Brisbane because it was honestly such a treat to see such a talented, passionate group of people like this perform. From the moment they got on stage they had my full attention, playing a great set of songs, including my two personal favourites from the EP, Up She Rises and Hades Way. They also did a cover of The Long Run by Redgum which was just awesome. Every member of The Bottlers is super talented and they play so well together that they come across as more than just a band and more like a musical family. There is nothing like watching creative people do what they love and feeling that energy from them. These guys are a good time and I honestly can’t wait to see them live again.
