As I sit here with my neck hurting from a good head banging session and covered in a few mosh bruises I can’t even begin to explain how great Saturday night’s gig at The Back Room really was. Melbourne’s Gods of Grindcore returned to Brisbane to play a killer set with supports from Child Bite, Laceration Mantra and Descent. What a great line up. What a great venue. What a great night.
The night kicked off with local Brisbane band, Descent. I had not had the pleasure of seeing these guys before and they totally blew me away, the perfect band to start the night. They played an extremely tight set and really took command of the stage. Front man, Ant was full of energy and his vocals were on point, the rest of the guys played so well and are clearly all extremely good at what they do and are very talented musicians. Not only do these guys sound good, but they look good too. Pleasing to the ears and the eyes I am pretty sure they now have a new biggest fan. I can’t wait to see these guys play again. Descent are currently working on a new album and I am so keen to get myself a copy when it is released.
Next up was Laceration Mantra, these guys are pure old school death metal. You can tell these guys have been doing there thing for some time and that they love what they do. Playing with passion and experience Laceration Mantra have a certain grace about them with a hard and heavy twist.
Child Bite are like a beautiful and brutal blend of Clutch, King Parrot, Primus, The Dead Kennedys and The Melvins. These guys are right in your face, full of energy and took to the stage in full force, a perfect support for King Parrot. It is very clear why these two bands get along so well and are big supporters of each other. Child Bite hail from Detroit and this is their first time touring Australia and I honestly think they picked the perfect band to tour with. Their hard hitting, non-stop, tight and fun set really worked the crowd and it left me wanting to see and hear more from these guys. I will be there to see them next time they come back to Australia that’s for sure.
Ahhh King Parrot. What can I say? So much love for these guys. They never fail to win my heart and blow my mind all at the same time. Every time I have seen them live I walk away loving them a little harder than the last time. From the moment they hit the stage they command full attention, truly talented musicians and performers they draw you in with their good time vibes and have everyone in the room loving every minute. They played an awesome mix of tracks from their latest album, Ugly Produce and a mix of all the fan favourites, with Dead End always getting an extremely big reaction from the crowd because what King Parrot fan is not completely in love with that song and the brilliantly funny film clip? Shawn from Child Bite got up and sung Shit On The Liver alongside Matt, the two vocalists both belting out the song together and clearly loving it. Not only are King Parrot amazing on stage but they are all really lovely guys and make sure they spend time with their fans after their gigs which is always a sign of a good band and good blokes in my opinion. This is why King Parrot have a very strong and dedicated fan base, they look after their fans and every single performance is the type of gig you walk away from already hanging for the next time you’ll see them. The guys are currently in the middle of a huge regional tour and if you get a chance, I highly recommend you get to as many of their gigs as possible.
