Pinch Grip has been a long time coming for Katanak. After winning The People’s Choice award at The QUBE Effect 2020, Katanak fulfilled his industry goal of working with Brisbane’s Dr Lachlan ‘Magoo’ Goold, ARIA award winner and all round legend in the Australian music industry. The result is a powerful, gritty, guitar driven indie rock track reminiscent of 5 Seconds of Summer crossed with The Wombats. The track was mixed by Magoo (Powderfinger, The Jungle Giants) and mastered by Simon Francis (Charlie Puth, Kodaline).
Katanak catapulted into 2021 with the release of ‘Valentine’ and his indie pop ode to summer Sunday feat. Joolz. Between these two tracks he’s been played on Triple J Unearthed, Double J Radio, ABC Radio, BBC Introducing Radio Solent (UK), Amazing Radio (both UK & US) and 4ZZZ (and many more) with Sunday’s video clip added to rotation on MTV Upload across Australia and New Zealand. Gathering praise from Auspop, LivewireAU and A&R Factory, Katanak is establishing himself as an exciting indie pop newcomer.
While Katanak is known for his infectious indie pop groove-inducing earworms that fans of The 1975, Circa Waves and The Wombats will appreciate, this track has taken a darker turn. He’s taken influence from gritty indie bands before him and this track heads down that path.
Katanak says “I wrote Pinch Grip after watching a friend fall under the spell of someone who wouldn’t commit to a relationship but wasn’t willing to let them go. The nature of the relationship was compelling from an outsider’s point of view and the guitar driven track emphasises the backwards and forwards of the key players. Pinch Grip is a favourite for the crowd and to play live at my gigs. I’ve got this awesome guitar intro that is dirty, throbbing and just sets the tone. It’s just a lot of fun with energy to burn. I’m always writing differently each time I sit down. Indie pop, indie rock, I just like writing music that makes me feel good.”
Unforgettable hooks, fun vibes and raw energy are classic Katanak. He is building a reputation for creating indie pop songs that get the crowd on their feet and moving to the groove. Expect bouncy, upbeat vocals, optimistic guitar and rhythmic indie-pop beats.
With gigs coming up in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, get along and catch his energetic set to find out why his following is continuing to build.
