“It’s good to see you happy
Even if it stings”
Sitting on her single bed one-year after ending her long term relationship, award-winning singer-songwriter, ELEEA, explored her conflicting feelings of happiness and stinging sadness in her new single, Stings, out 19 November.
Drenched in nostalgia, ELEEA’s sensitive voice, lingering electric guitar and emotive crescendos were brought to life by ARIA chart-topping producer, Brad Hosking (Amy Shark), culminating in an indie track that hints towards The Cranberries Linger and Taylor Swift’s Mirror Ball.
“My writing is always very raw, but Stings feels particularly autobiographical. It captures those very confusing moments when you are overjoyed that someone you’ve loved is happy again in their next relationship, while simultaneously agonising over how their new partner has fit straight into your old life… that can really sting,” said ELEEA.
“The verses are so simple and capture such ordinary moments, but I feel like they paint a really precise picture. It’s not a typically angry or sad breakup song, because that wouldn’t have been true to my situation. But the whole song is wrapped in sentimentality, which can be a really chaotic thing to feel.”
Written in 2019, Stings builds on ELEEA’s July 2021 release, I’d Beg, further showcasing the songwriting talent that has seen her win several Queensland Music Award nods, receive competitive RADF and APRA grants, and be selected as a finalist in the prestigious APRA Professional Development Awards since her first single, Wasting Time, came out last year.
Stings is out NOW on all streaming platforms, supported by three South East Queensland launch shows at Distillery Road Markets, Mo’s Desert Clubhouse and Vinnie’s Dive.
Stings has been supported by Arts Queensland and the Regional Arts Development Fund.
