EVEN Postpone Sydney Launch For ‘Reverse Light Years’

Melbourne indie-rock legends EVEN have announced this morning the postponement of their Sydney ‘Reverse Light Years’ album launch, which was set to take place this Friday at Mary’s Underground.

In a statement just posted on Even’s socials, bandleader Ashley Naylor said:

Dear Sydney friends,

We hope you are all well.

Our scheduled show for Friday 7th January at Mary’s Underground will be rescheduled to another date.

We apologise for the late notice but as the show draws closer, we think it best to hold off on holding a show in Sydney until a time where band and attendees might feel less anxious about attending an indoor show.

Thanks to all folks who have purchased tickets to the Sydney show. We will update you all soon with rescheduled date. Ticket holders can hang onto their tickets and use them for the new date. Alternately, refund options are available.

The announcement follows the postponement of their Adelaide launch late last week. Ticket holders should note that tickets will be valid for the rescheduled show when it happens, or they can contact their point of purchase for a refund.

EVEN’s ‘Reverse Light Years‘ – their first ever DOUBLE album – is out now on El Reno Music. The album is available now on Double CD and digitally – unfortunately, due to worldwide pressing delays, the gorgeous vinyl Double LP editions won’t be available until early in the new year. ‘Reverse Light Years’ is the long-extant band’s first new album proper since 2018’s ‘Satin Returns’, and is a record that reveals stunning ambitions and a feast of radiant guitars and melody.

The album’s release follows that of two singles. Most recent was Cherry Afterglow following Six Monkeys, which was automatically playlisted by Double J. Six Monkeys was a full-bodied heavy hitter built on a simple but irresistible lick that defines the term ‘jangle pop’. Cherry Afterglow carries an atmospheric vibe but is no less enrapturing. The new double album ‘Reverse Light Years’ covers the full range of Even flavours and introduces some delicious new ones.

‘Reverse Light Years’ is the band’s eighth album, not counting compilations including last year’s covers collection ‘Down the Shops’. It is very much a product of Melbourne’s on-again/off-again lockdown – a lockdown which has seen Even unable to play (although they did squeeze a couple of pre-Xmas shows in last year) and which, although the band did venture into a studio when circumstances allowed, enabled Naylor to make great use of his home studio setup.

“Some of our previous albums have been partially recorded in my home studio space but this record was very different for obvious reasons,” explains Ash. “No deadlines other than those self-imposed and no watching the clock. This freed me up to explore and indulge. The relative privacy of the home studio space afforded me the luxury to go deep into another world without distractions often attached to the recording process.”

The result of this exploration and indulgence is clearly the band’s most ambitious album to date; a fuller realisation of ambitions hinted at on the previous tracks like the last album’s Return To Stardust. It is an ambition that is perhaps the inevitable result of such a long time in the game, and the result of immersion in more ambitious music.
