Cairns-based bedroom-pop artist Jelly Oshen has just shared his silken new track Bordalonely – produced by Stephen ‘DubKlaat’ Maxell (Katchafire, Seanizzle).
Bordalonely is a tranquil, sunshine-tinged slice of R&B, led by Oshen’s effortless vocals, reverberating guitar strums and airy percussion. The choruses open the song up with warm groove-laden bass and engrossing strings before Oshen flaunts his versatility with his assured rap delivery in the track’s second verse. The song concludes in its aforementioned confident, hazy style, showcasing Oshen as an artist firmly in his element.
Jelly Oshen talks about the process behind Bordalonely: “Most of my music is recorded at home with my stepdad. My writing process is just making a poem and then creating a good music genre melody to fit, or vice versa. I was bored in lockdown and kinda lonely, my mum was imposing her own self-isolation on us, above and beyond any government rules, and this track sprung from that.”
The release is accompanied by a scenic music video – directed by Phillip McFarlane and shot in Jamaica. The 21-year old’s self-described ‘island flava’ influenced mix of indie pop, and R&B has seen fans and media draw likenesses in his musical works to Rex Orange County and Frank Ocean.
To coincide with the release, Jelly Oshen will be performing at Festival Of The Sun in Port Macquarie with Hermitude, BENEE, The Chats and Middle Kids, and Rolling Hills Festival in Brisbane. This follows on from Oshen being hand-picked to open for Tones & I in 2020 and ticking off support duties for Dami Im, Emily Wurramara, Greta Stanley and Ben Lee.
His previous releases have been supported by The Australian, The AU Review, ABC’s rage, Spotify, triple j and triple j Unearthed, where he took out a coveted Feature Artist spot last year.
