DYLAN J Shares New Single ‘Before It Started’ + Announces Forthcoming EP

Singer/song-writer Dylan J today returns with new single Before It Started, the follow up to previous single Notice Me with Ruel and the second taste from his forthcoming EP ‘4 Songs I Made In California’ due for release on May 19th.

In contrast to the slower style of previous single Notice Me, Before It Started is anthemic, soaring and effortless. “Only on rare occasions do I find that songs write themselves and Before It Started was one of them. I’m almost certain I wrote this entire song in around 45 minutes. I was experiencing a deep sadness and disappointment from a relationship that ended before it had the chance to become a relationship, one I felt so confident about. So this song had to be written, purely for me to process what I was feeling at the time.”

Dylan initially made his name as a rapper, but if you ask him, he’s always wanted to spend more time belting out hooks. “To be honest I never really had the confidence in my singing,” he adds. “Whenever I’d be on the road with other rappers they’d always ask me to sing, so I decided to focus on it more.” That meant putting in the work, including enrolling in a military style vocal training boot camp – “Man it was crazy, you had to commit upfront to ten weeks before they’d even consider letting you in” – which resulted in a newfound understanding of the dynamism and flex in his voice.

Following his successful debut (and triple j feature album), ‘Authentic Lemonade’, a string of sold out headline shows in Melbourne and support slots for the likes of NF, Jess Glynne and Ruel, the new sound of Dylan J is another powerful step forward as he looks to keep writing the music he was always meant to, leaving no question as to what makes him such an undeniable talent.

Stay tuned for more to come from Dylan J.
