After receiving its First Play on triple j’s Home and Hosed last night, today Yb. releases his evocative new single Change Your Mind – offering a tantalising first taste of the Meanjin sensation’s eagerly anticipated and soon to be announced debut EP.
Recently handpicked by triple j Unearthed to open the inaugural THIS THAT at Sandstone Point and landing two nominations at this year’s Queensland Music Awards, Yb. returns with the sonic equivalent of sunshine on the skin. Change Your Mind is a glistening alt-pop track tinted with a golden hue. Melting into an all-encompassing drum line and rich guitar stylings, this single is overflowing with fuzzy, full layered production that lifts Yb.’s signature velvet vocals. Yb. teamed up with fellow rising indie powerhouse, Stevan to craft ‘this anthem of emotional acceptance – resulting in a track that was as effortless to create as it is to enjoy. “Everything sorta fell into place with the song,” gushes Yb., “I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.”
Lyrically, the song tells of the tumultuous journey of accepting one’s own feelings. In Yb.’s words, “Change Your Mind in its essence is about emotional acceptance. Written into the song, is a series of challenging feelings and realisations. These lyrics follow an interaction between two parties battling their internal sentiments, ultimately leading to ‘the singer’ accepting that they are not in control of the tendencies of another.”
Yb. has wasted no time in claiming his place in the spotlight – recently announcing his signing to UNDR ctrl booking agency and heading on the road to support fellow Aussie faves, San Cisco, on their QLD dates. Yb.’s previous release, the irresistibly warm Coffee Shop, received its First Play on triple j Home and Hosed, was added to Unearthed rotation, landed the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds AU & NZ as well as a spot on New Music AU & NZ and Apple Music‘s New Music Daily. Not just making waves on his local scene, Yb. has surpassed over four million catalogue streams globally and has attracted worldwide attention from the likes of Tom Misch, Dangermouse and Snakehips. The Meanjin local’s infectious groove Dance With Me Today also landed a sync opportunity in the highly praised SunDance film Cha Cha Real Smooth.
If you haven’t made up your mind about Yb. yet, this song will definitely Change Your Mind.
