Returning in full force with their first release of the year, Canberra-based indie punk / rock outfit Sputnik Sweetheart are serving up high-powered punk prowess in their newest single Lindy Hop, as well as announcing a national headline tour – tickets on sale now.
Fusing indie rock rawness with rousing post-punk flourishes, Sputnik Sweetheart are making their eagerly-awaited return with their hardest-hitting track to date, Lindy Hop, written about falling in love during the time of the marriage equality plebiscite and the contrasting feelings experienced during this period, as vocalist Nette France explains: “I wrote a lot of the lyrics for Lindy Hop around 4 years ago during the marriage equality plebiscite, and at the time I was in a relatively new relationship and that was really exciting and beautiful,†she says. “But it was also a stressful, chaotic time to navigate because we were both processing the influx of homophobia around us. Part of ‘Lindy Hop’ is all about the joys of falling in love and the intense honeymoon period. Another part is all about the total frustration and disappointment I felt towards the people that led us to such divisiveness.”
The past two years have pushed Sputnik Sweetheart into a freshly refined sonic territory, drawing inspiration from one another, their experiences, and other artists that they admire, sharing the mindset that “every creative decision should serve the songâ€.
Through this, they have well-and-truly found their stride, pushing boundaries and trying things that they’ve never done before, clear in the invigorating depth of ‘Lindy Hop’, which is propelled by wiry indie melodies boasting blistering electric guitar riffs, evocative lyrics and Nette’s beautifully sinister vocals.
“Sonically, it took a long time to put together, it’s probably one of our only songs where lyrics were written before the music,†Nette adds. “It had many different parts added and taken out but we’re all really happy with where it landed in the studio.â€
Recorded at The Grove Studios in NSW with an expert team including Jack Nigro, Tom McKenzie and Robin Schmidt, Lindy Hop showcases Sputnik Sweetheart’s sonic sophistication with a punk-charged rock raver, which will keep you on your toes, whether you’re at home or in a mosh pit.
Alongside the release of Lindy Hop, Sputnik Sweetheart are gearing up for their national tour, commencing on the Gold Coast on June 3, before visiting Brisbane, Wollongong, Melbourne and Canberra – tickets are on sale now.
