Ahead of her debut Splendour performance later this month, Brisbane/Meanjin-based singer, songwriter and producer (and today’s Front Left cover star) Sycco (pron. ‘psycho’), shares her new single Jinx along with the accompanying music video. It’s an urgent, bass-driven pop cut that opens up a new direction for the 20 year old multi-talented artist. The track is the follow-up to Superstar, which was released during her recent headline tour and just ahead of her debut visit to Europe and the UK.
Jinx began its life in 2020 when Sycco was in England visiting family and doing some sessions. The song was written on her last day in a London studio about her desire to return and make more music. Alas, the COVID-19 pandemic came into effect, and Sycco was unable to return to the UK until this year, leaving the fate of Jinx hanging in the air.
She says: “I was in my Charli XCX praise phase and in my feelings about leaving my UK family the next day, so I wanted to create something dark, melancholic, sad and quite stressful – I think the production reflects this, as well as the lyrics.â€
Now, after returning to the UK last month, Jinx is fully complete and out in the world. Forgoing the sun-kissed psych of previous releases, the track is gritty and brimming with emotion. The full-band arrangements are replaced with rattling UK Garage-inspired drums and evocative pulses of synth. Sycco’s vocals still remain full of personality, finding a new level of power over the skeletal production. Directed by Callum Harrison alongside a team of exciting young creatives in London, the accompanying video is also out today.
Sycco – aka 20 year old First Nations artist Sasha McLeod – has already appeared in Vogue, KCRW, Alternative Press, NME, Billboard, Paper, Cool Hunting, Nylon, Paste, triple j, and BBC Radio 1, among others. She’s amassed tens of millions of streams, sold out her debut national headline tour, appeared in YouTube Music’s Foundry Class of 2021, Spotify‘s Equal Campaign and was chosen as an Apple Music Up Next Artist, as well as receiving the Levi’s Music Prize and a string of other accolades, which have added to her ever-growing list of achievements.
With Jinx, she is set to move even further along: it is another bold step in what is set to be a breakout year that will see her support Tame Impala and Glass Animals on their headline tours later this year. Stay tuned for more news.
