Sunshine Coast singer-songwriter, Calan Mai, has returned with his new single, Great Grey North—a Britpop tribute to the ever-grey UK. Recorded in Chicago with famed producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine) and mixed by Peter Holz (Gang of Youths, Peking Duk), this track has broken hearts and crossed oceans in the making.
After a two-year stint in Manchester, Calan Mai returned to Australia with the love of his life. When a management deal sent him to America, this relationship ended. Great Grey North is a break-up song about the moments in between. Over non-stop strums, Calan Mai weaves a story from rainy snapshots, hazy regrets and half-remembered dialogue like a man waking from a dream and aching to return.
After years spent making folk music in the US and UK, Calan Mai is home—ready rock and potentially roll if conditions are right. Great Grey North is the perfect vehicle for Calan Mai’s storytelling: heartfelt, funny and bittersweet.
