After releasing two warmly received singles, Naarm/Melbourne-based indie-rock artist Jacob Fitzgerald has just unveiled his new single Long Way Home – produced by the artist himself, and long-time friend/collaborator Brent Quirk, with mastering by George Georgiadis (Gang of Youths, The Vanns, Tyne James-Organ) at Little Wing Sound.
Long Way Home is an earnest yearning of shining delay, shimmering synths and stoic rhythm determined to quell the pain left by a love that had everything offered to it before it broke two hearts. Jacob‘s vocals are front and centre, lamenting with a humble reverb that rallies with the patient bass, ethereal sweep of cymbals and support of the call and response of his friends and bandmates in the chorus. A staccato refrain marches firmly back into the sanguine pre-chorus and then bravely into the final chorus with backing vocals reaffirming the honesty of loss and bargaining.
Jacob talks about the meaning behind Long Way Home: “It covers my own heartbreak and tells a story of loss. Basically, ‘Long Way Home’ is the song I wish I never had to write… Essentially, LWH is about savouring the moment before the final goodbye. It follows the shock of heartbreak and captures the emotions of knowing that no matter what is said, the choice won’t be yours… they’ve made up their mind. It was a goal of the band and me to capture the intimacy and intensity of this track both lyrically and sonically. Overall, ‘Long Way Home’ was written to mend a broken heart, and with the help of my closest friends, we built a track that we just fricken love! I’m so proud of it as it captures a moment in time, I never knew I wanted to keep. It’s my silver lining and I can only hope it makes people feel something too!”
Jacob’s recent releases Muse and Shame on You received strong support from the likes of triple j Unearthed, MTV and Apple Music. He has also seen high praise in the online sphere from Music Feeds, Scenestr, Backseat Mafia (UK), AAA Backstage, Australian Music Scene, Ear To The Ground (USA), Milky, Starving Kids, Sounds Of Oz, Be Groovy Or Leave and Good Call Live.
To celebrate the release, Jacob and his band will hit the road once again, with four performances in Meanjin/Brisbane, Eora/Sydney, Tandanya/Adelaide and Naarm/Melbourne. He’s previously sold-out headline shows and supported the likes of The Delta Riggs, Fergus James and John Floreani (Trophy Eyes).
In the coming weeks, Jacob will be releasing an accompanying music video for Long Way Home.
