Sly Withers have finally gifted fans with the release of their much-anticipated third studio album ‘Overgrown’, out today via Dew Process / UMA. The epic 14-track album includes previous heavy hitting singles Passing Through and Radio plus their most recent offering Something.
Working with long time collaborators Tim Elphick and Shannan Stewart, who also built the monster costumes, the clip was shot at Tim’s dad’s property in Toodyay, WA alongside some bloodthirsty alpacas who weren’t fans of the monster attire.Â
“It was probably the most hands off we’ve been in the creation of a Sly video ever, and it was so cool to have Tim and Shan co-directing and just giving them the space to do their thing as brilliantly as they do. We had a lovely couple of days out there hanging in all the beautiful scenery. Sam’s sister reckons we did a good job reflecting all the themes of the song through the visuals, and she’s a high school English teacher so we must’ve done something right!â€
The band worked alongside Dave ‘Parko’ Parkinson (Spacey Jane) to bring to life this masterfully elevated record full of soaring choruses and powerful anthemic ballads.
Discussing the recording process, Parko says, “Being a Beatles fan, I loved the idea of multiple songwriters and singers within the same band. It’s not something I come across very often. That alone makes for a unique experience during the production and makes for a more unique record as well. Everyone was so open to trying different production styles. We grouped the recordings into lots of 3 tracks, so every week we would restart our process for 3 more songs. Only thinking about 3 songs at a time is a great way to not get overwhelmed by the quantity of songs.â€
Building on their sound, the band focused on going “prettier†this time around with the inclusion of layering through the use of acoustic guitars, synths and string parts played by Clancy Davidson (Noah Dillon, Smol Fish).
Vocalist / guitarist Sam says, “We are SO proud of what we’ve made and so stoked with how the whole process of working with our producer Dave Parkin turned out. We made the exact kind of record we wanted to make and there’s some definite progression sonically from our previous releases. Overgrown has been our life for the last year, but now it’s yours to keep. We hope it can bring you the joy and comfort it’s given us.â€
On working with the band, Parko says, “The Sly family are such a lovely bunch of people to spend a couple of months with. At the end of each day, one of the most important things to consider is how enjoyable your day was, you want to feel eager and free every day. The Sly gang made each day a pleasure, which to me, is easily as important as what we are recording.â€
Their biggest Australian national tour kicks off next week where fans can experience ‘Overgrown’ for the very first time. Don’t miss out – check www.slywithers.com for details.
