Western Star is the latest release from Far North Queensland’s singer-songwriter Ella Hartwig – sharing that it’s okay to let life take you where it needs to and follow your instincts.

Written in a hotel room along an Australian East Coast Highway, Western Star is the perfect track for any travelling adventure, or anyone feeling lost in their way.

I was driving along somewhere on the A1 highway and a Western Star truck pulled up next to me. The line ‘travelling next to a Western Star’ came to me, and I wrote the song that night in a hotel room”.

Ella mentions that where she grew up in the remote town of Cooktown, there were no traffic lights, and the seasons came in pairs: the wet and dry! The song connects with her folk/country roots, as the track title suggests. Her family has a history of driving and selling trucks out of New South Wales, so being on the highway and writing songs feels the most liberating!

Fresh out of home and facing her twenties, Ella was travelling between her hometown and Brisbane City.

Ella has been internationally recognised for her songwriting and has been recognised through two Queensland Music Award nominations for songs off her Debut EP (2019). Western Star is the second release of what is to be a folk/pop/country fusion album expected in 2024.

Ella will be celebrating her single launch tour across two shows at Brisbane/Meanjin’s Suzie Wong’s on November 18th and the official launch at It’s Still a Secret on December 10th.
