It’s been a quiet couple of years for Beth Seymour, historically Melbourne’s busiest person in punk music. With her last official single released in 2023 under her previous artist name (Luke Seymoup), Beth took a step back from music in the wake of coming out as transgender in early 2024. Now, she has returned with a reinvigorated passion for her craft and a backlog of powerful songs ready to be unleashed on the world.

Beth’s first single under her true name, Medication, is out today for a February 14th // Valentine’s Day release accompanied by her faithful backing band (now known as The Lizzies). The acoustic track sees Beth wrestle with her personal demons of ADHD, OCD and gender dysphoria, while resolving herself to push through the darkness with the help of prescription medications.

“It can be embarrassing to feel like you’re wired differently to everyone else, and to feel as if you have to take medication just to be palatable to them,” Beth says. “It’s like a sense of jealousy. You think, why can’t I just feel and act like everyone else? But the other side is that, for a lot of us, our brain (which is supposed to be our ally) seems to be actively working against us. So, if taking my meds helps me persevere through the horrors of existence, I’ll gladly take them. You’re brave and powerful just for persisting.”

Having a reputation for being a prolific writer of music, Beth has worked tirelessly on writing and recording music during her hiatus. From her home studio deep in Ferntree Gully in Melbourne’s east, she has recorded the best material of her career, with clarity and honesty positioned front and centre of upcoming releases.

“It’s freeing to finally be able to be transparent with what I’m writing songs about. There’s a lot of my previous music that I’ve been able to retroactively reveal was about my mental health struggles, particularly with gender identity, since coming out,” Beth explains. “It’s long overdue, but I’m thrilled to finally be here. It’s made me fall in love with making music all over again, and I’ve written and started recording so much music for all my bands. I’m particularly excited about the epic new Lizzies album which ‘Medication’ comes from.”

Medication was written, recorded and mixed by Beth Seymour in scenic Ferntree Gully, and mastered by Jesse Cannon (The Menzingers, Saves The Day, The Front Bottoms).
