CARDBOARD CUTOUTS Return With Alt-Rock Belter ‘Ask Around’

With their compelling debut album due for release next month, Toowoomba alt-rock outfit Cardboard Cutouts have shared their third offering from the record – the genre-blending rock belter, Ask Around.

Accompanying the release is the news of Cardboard Cutout’s national album tour, set to kick off on June 27 in Brisbane. Their most extensive run of shows yet, the tour will visit stages across QLD, NSW, TAS, and ACT.

The band reveal Ask Around is, at its core, a break up song. “It was written about the emotional exhaustion of a drawn out break up – it’s messy, raw, heartfelt, and a bit of a belter. It’s not just about losing a partner, but all of the things that come with that, like close friends and favourite memories.”

Ask Around follows lead single My Best Friend and follow-up Steer, and is another chapter in their forthcoming album ‘Politics and Footy Tips’ slated for release on June 27. A candid and powerful commentary on anxiety, self-acceptance, and perseverance, the album promises to show Cardboard Cutouts at their most emotionally raw and sonically refined.

“Every single song on the album has a rich story behind it, and we aimed to highlight this by giving each song its own distinct sound and style,” says Cardboard Cutouts. “We started conceptualising the record at the very beginning of the band, over 5 years ago. It was only when we jumped into the studio with our producer, Harry Verity, at the end of 2023, that things really started coming together. We spent the next 10 months with that legend making what has become ‘Politics and Footy Tips’, and we can’t wait to share it.”

My Best Friend and Steer are prime examples of the band’s ability to combine gutsy, emotive choruses with introspective, delicate moments. The tracks earned airplay across triple j Unearthed and community radio, plus praise from the likes of Happy Mag, HEAVY, The Pitch of Discontent, Sounds of Oz, Palisade Weekly and more. My Best Friend landed an addition to Rage’s weekend music video playlisting, and Steer was featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds AU/NZ and Fresh Finds Rock playlists.

The live stage is where Cardboard Cutouts’ discography truly comes alive, and it’s their exhilarating, community-building performances that have seen them grow from playing school events to sharing stages with the likes of Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Greta Stanley, Vera Blue, Concrete Surfers, and more. Earlier this year, Cardboard Cutouts embarked on their first ever interstate tour in support of My Best Friend, performing five shows across Brisbane (their first ticketed headliner, where they sold almost 150 tickets), Toowoomba, Melbourne, Canberra, and Newcastle. Their upcoming album release tour will see them revisit these cities and others across 12 dates between June and August.
