Sydney-based sad party punkers Clay J Gladstone take things back to their roots with cheeky new single Talk Of The Town, out now via DefWolf Records. The new song follows April’s Postmodern Teenage Angst, and June’s Death By Idle Hands, further teasing a debut album set to drop later in the year.
Talk Of The Town is vintage Clay J Gladstone – turbulent, cheeky and meticulously messy. It comes paired with a performative music video filmed in the bands resident recording studio.
Lyrically, the track is a comment on how hard navigating the music industry is these days, and how much more than music is required to ‘make it’. “Talk Of The Town is my uppercut to the business side of the music industry,” says vocalist Tim Wisbey. “Targeting those elitists and gatekeepers that decide whether your social media is vogue and colossal enough to give you a shot. It makes me sick thinking how tough it is for younger bands coming through, or any band really.”
“It’s not just about the music – though I guess it never really has been. You basically need to be an expert in marketing, sales, relationship management, bookings, or even dance choreography to cut through the fog. Anyway, I’m not whining. I could die tomorrow and be happy that I got to write this song, pretending I’ve made it and giving the middle finger to any creature that’s tried to cut us at the knees along the way.”
Coined Corey Taylor‘s ‘New Fkn Favourite Band’ on a tour last December, Clay J Gladstone teamed up with ARIA award-nominated producer Shane Edwards (The Libertines, Trophy Eyes, You Me At Six) on Talk Of The Town and previous two singles Postmodern Teenage Angst and Death By Idle Hands. The latter of which collected play on RAGE, triple j spins across multiple programs, rotation on The Hoist on SYN FM and editorial love globally.
Clay J partnered Death By Idle Hands with news of the bands signing to independent Sydney-based record label DefWolf Records. The label will celebrate its launch with a party this Saturday July 20 at Waywards in Newtown, Sydney, headlined by Clay J Gladstone and joined by St Sinner and Brooklyn Comic. The band will follow this up with a main support slot with The Menzingers at Crowbar Sydney on August 18 – tickets on sale now.
Clay J‘s manic blend of alt rock, emo, indie, punk – or as the band playfully describes it ‘whatever the hell you want to call it’ – has resonated with audiences across the nation and has seen them become regulars on the East Coast live circuit. With a healthy sprinkling of single releases since their EP drop, Clay J have proven to be one of Sydney’s most exciting new acts. They’ve sold out multiple headline shows and boast previous support slots with the likes of heavyweight internationals Electric Callboy and Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor – who hand picked the band as main support for a tour last December.
Clay J Gladstone encourage listeners to watch this space, and anticipate a wave of new music and shows throughout ’24.
