Brisbane artist Eli Wan has released his second single Helena On Hinge. It’s a hyper-catchy, early-2000s-leaning pop hit that lands with a twist – nostalgic at the edges but flipped into a version that’s very “Eli-core.” It’s bright, emotionally chaotic and instantly addictive, tracking a digital crush that spirals way beyond the screen and toes the line between heartbreak and humour.
The lyrics loop and tumble – “Helena was her name, oh damn boy I fell for her again” – echoing the cycle of swiping, falling, deleting and falling all over again. It’s playful, dramatic and lightly unhinged.
Eli makes music reminiscent of noughties indie-pop heavyweights – think Passion Pit, Bloc Party and Porter Robinson. It’s nostalgic, hazy and emotionally wired in a way that feels instantly familiar. Eli’s songs orbit themes of wistfulness, loneliness, divine revelation, pseudo-ADHD spirals and late-night Pinterest voyeurism.
To celebrate the release, Eli is playing a headline show at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane tonight.
