Evocative Experimental Artist FHAE Releases New Single ‘Old Lonely Oak Tree’

For their first release of 2025, fhae (Ellena Ramsay) reflects on their recent experiences with stepping into the dating world, finding themselves unprepared for the emotional turbulence that awaited. The endless cycle of fleeting connections, unspoken expectations, and the eerie comfort of detachment became a haunting rhythm—one that ultimately shaped Old Lonely Oak Tree.

This track isn’t just about love and loss; it’s about the exhaustion of modern dating, where intimacy is often reduced to transactions, and emotional walls are built higher to avoid the pain of real connection. Through hypnotic storytelling and eerie, poetic lyricism, fhae explores the tension between desire and self-preservation.

Using acoustic guitar, bowed electric guitar, and eerie reverbed vocals that are layered and harmonized, ‘old lonely oak tree’ evokes a sense of unease and discomfort, mirroring the themes of the song. The instrumentation builds an unsettling atmosphere, drawing listeners deeper into its haunting world.

Each verse unfolds a dark fable—twisting the language of affection into something visceral and unrelenting. “He wanted to see me, so I took his eyes… He wanted to touch me, so I severed his hands…” The song’s escalating intensity mirrors the way vulnerability is weaponized, where giving too much of yourself can leave you feeling hollow.

“It wasn’t the men that wanted to use me and discard me that scared me,” says Ramsay. “It was the ones that wanted to get to know me. Their intentions, masked by beautiful layers of silken lies, planned personas and promises. Sometimes it felt like I was giving away small parts of my soul every time I told a story about what I feared when I was little or that big family holiday we took when I was 10. How I almost passed out solo in a sauna, but my mum found me, sweaty, barely lucid and guided me inside to cool down. The ones that wanted to use me for my body, they didn’t bother pretending. They were honest and I preferred it.”

FHAE will be launching Old Lonely Oak Tree at the intimate It’s Still A Secret on Friday June 27th as part of a double launch with Spirit Lights for their debut album alongside good friends Ghostwoods (in quartet mode). Tickets will be available soon.
