Today, Naarm/Melbourne-based vocalist, producer, songwriter and bassist FELIVAND shares this very thing – the second single from her forthcoming album, ‘my body’s my true north’, coming July 18.

this very thing hums with quiet conviction and emotional clarity. Tender yet gritty, the track evokes the ache of longing for something true – something felt not just in thought, but in the body. Whether heard as a love song or an anthem for self-worth, this very thing glows with the quiet knowing that being alone is far better than compromising on what makes your soul light up.

Co-written in Los Angeles with Grammy-nominated producer Chris McClenney (H.E.R., Khalid, Jamila Woods), the track began as something smooth and funk-driven, but evolved into a grungier, riffier expression – expanding into something raw and textured while retaining FELIVAND’s signature warmth. McClenney, whose jazz background and deep collaborative catalogue inform his nuanced musicality, brings a fluid sense of space and emotional depth to the track, shaping its delicate balance between intimacy and movement.

“this very thing is about not desiring anything short of what feels utterly aligned and expansive,” shares FELIVAND. “The ‘thing’ is that special and rare mutual yearning feeling that’s palpable and electric when you meet someone special, platonically or romantically. I’d rather be on my own than in a relationship I’m unsure or uneasy about in my body, or one that doesn’t spark that authentic joy within me, hence the I don’t want anything, if it’s not this very thing.”

On the process and concept of the album, this was an entirely new, uninhibited and expansive direction for FELIVAND. “The concept of the album is all about trusting feeling over thought. It’s a stepping into and an acceptance of the stories, experiences and memories that shape who I am. When I listen to what my body’s telling me, it feels like an unwavering light at the end of the tunnel, an orienting point – something fixed like a ‘true north’ while everything else around it spins. When I follow thought, I’m in with everything that’s spinning.” FELIVAND worked alongside a boundary-pushing group of collaborators for this upcoming album, including Chris McClenney (Khalid, H.E.R), Austin Brown (Doechii, UMI), Billy Lemos (SZA, Tinashe), Taydex (Jon Batiste, Princess Nokia), Wes Singerman (Kehlani, Joji, Masego), Maxwell Byrne (1tbsp, Golden Vessel), Cameron Evans (Blu DeTiger, St Panther) and Simon Lam (Kllo, Ralph Castelli).
