Today, West Australian indie-rock favourites Great Gable open a new chapter as they kickstart what is set to be a massive year ahead with new single Best Friend, via Warner Music Australia.

Produced by Perth’s Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane, Jebediah), Best Friend is an infectiously laden indie-rock track that punches a radiating sun-soaked hook and perfectly transitions listeners from Summer into Autumn. The heartfelt lyrics hear them describing the moment where you fall in love with someone and realise you have a new best friend in them.

“Best Friend was written and recorded in the middle of a Western Australian summer. The song reminds me of being at home with my best friend doing all the little things that make our home and life so special. It feels warm and nostalgic just like a trip to your favourite beach”, says frontman Alex Whiteman.

2023 saw Great Gable – made up of Alex Whiteman (vocals), Matt Preen (guitar), Christopher Bye (bass), and newly joined Madi Hanley (drums), release their EP ‘Read The Room’. Featuring singles So Cool and Pumpernickel, the bold collection of songs hinted at a live focus which was complemented by a sold out national tour run supporting Matt Corby as well as an extensive headline tour. The EP followed their 2022 sophomore record ‘On The Wall In The Morning Light’ which was spearheaded by the hugely successful singles such as Hazy, and the exhilarating Dancing Shoes.

It’s been a steady and relentless rise for the Great Gable who began jamming together after meeting at university in Perth. Alex and Matt were childhood friends, drawn together with a mutual love of artists like Jack Johnson, Bon Iver, Noah And The Whale, and The Kooks. It didn’t take the four of them long to gain attention: early EPs like 2016’s ‘Gg’, 2017’s ‘Modern Interactions’, and 2019’s ‘Lazy Bones Tapes’ brilliantly collided early 2000’s NYC rock and UK indie, with a fair whack of Australian summer thrown in there for good measure.

By the time their debut album ‘Tracing Faces’ arrived in 2020, Great Gable had already amassed millions of streams. They went on to grace the stages of festivals like Groovin The Moo and Falls Festival, and notch up a stack of enviable support slots with the likes of The Jungle Giants, Thelma Plum, and Ocean Alley.

Best Friend is only the first taste of new music from Great Gable in 2024. Stay tuned for more exciting news from the WA favourites soon.
