GRUB, the unapologetically fierce rock outfit led by the brutally honest and darkly humorous Matilda Beales, are back with a powerful new single, The Floor, a track born from the depths of personal struggle and transformed into an anthem of resilience and shared emotions.

Following on from November’s debut single, Ghost, GRUB is creating a discography reflective of their ethos—raw, unapologetic, and profoundly human, inviting listeners to embrace life’s messiness, to feel deeply, and to find strength in solidarity.

Frontwoman Matilda Beales penned The Floor during a challenging chapter of her life, midway through chemotherapy, sharing, “I was feeling pretty awful and spending a lot of time lying on my bedroom floor. So this was my attempt at a bit of a ‘pull up your boot straps and get on with it’ sort of vibe.”

What began as an internal pep talk to summon strength evolved into an anthem for perseverance, extending beyond her own struggles to honour the resilience of friends and loved ones facing their own adversities. “What I like about this song is when the chorus came along, the focus then shifted outside of me and my shit and became a song for the people I know and all the stuff they were going through”, explains Beales. “The song goes from a very internal dialogue with myself to an all-out rant to the people around me”.

Musically, The Floor encapsulates GRUB’s unique blend of sultry and raging rock. With Beales’ biting lyricism at the forefront, backed by electrifying lead guitar from Duncan Strachan and Mitch McDonald, grounding bass from Edo Ekic, the propulsive rhythms of drummer Peter Bibby, Carla Geneve as a guest on the recording, and backing vocals from all involved. It’s a sound that’s both intense and cathartic, inspired by a wide range of influences, including Peep Temple, Idles, and AC/DC.

Since their formation, GRUB has evolved into a formidable force, sharing stages with bands like Kill Devil Hills, Full Flower Moon Band, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and Last Quokka. Known for their gritty, high-energy performances, GRUB is carving a space in the Australian rock scene that’s both fiercely unique and emotionally resonant.

You can catch GRUB live supporting Pond on 13 February at The River, Margaret River, 14 February at Froth Craft Brewery, Bunbury, and supporting Peep Temple on 22 & 23 March at The Buffalo Club, Fremantle.
