Riley From Earth, the project of Eora/Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist Riley Wingfield, today shares his new single, sips.
First originating from an experimental guitar loop, sips brings Riley’s indie rock sensibilities to the forefront, offering a textural depth drawn from his cross-genre influences across songwriting and production. Anchored by the driving beat, sips unfolds into hazy vocal harmonies punctuated by sharp guitar riffs, building an expansive, atmospheric soundscape akin to the likes of Mk.gee, Toro Y Moi and Nilüfer Yanya.
“I remember in 2019 pitching a loop of my guitar down an octave and hearing something similar to the bass line of ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ by The Stone Roses, which I think directly influenced the chugging rhythm track of ‘sips’,” Riley shares. “The song went through many different versions, but I held onto the first few things I created back then.”
Though warm and radiant in its sonic palette, sips harbours a stirring vulnerability in its lyrics, as Riley confronts the subject of mental health with empathy and transparency.
sips follows Riley’s most recent release was it worth it – an anthemic musing on connection and transience, brought to life through off-kilter guitar and gentle shoegaze vocals. These latest offerings have sketched out a territory unlike any of his previous work, applying a confident fluidity and renewed emotional depth to his songwriting as he navigates his own contortion in the world.
First releasing music under the moniker Oshan, including his first EP ‘Music At Home’ and follow-up single Love Hate feat. Rome Fortune, Riley From Earth continues the genre-bending sonic exploration of his earlier endeavours. With a renewed focus on songwriting, guitar and vocal experimentation, Riley follows his instincts rather than convention, taking on all writing, producing, performing and mixing duties to bring a distinct edge to his craft. Blending a pastiche of his own varied influences – from electronic, indie rock, post-punk, R&B and more – his forward-thinking approach, combined with his emotive lyricism, has garnered global praise from the likes of Mixmag, The Music, triple j and Unearthed, rage, fbi.radio, and George FM (NZ) among others.
