Off the back of a massive US tour supporting Motel Breakfast, Melbourne-based singer songwriter Seb Szabo is today unveiling his first release of 2022, Leaning On You (Wrecking Ball), alongside a national headline tour.
Following on his 2021 EP ‘Staring Out The Windows’, this new track sees the Californian born artist embrace a bold darkness we haven’t seen before as Seb explores his own struggles with mental health and self identity, reclaiming his confidence with powerful delivery and foot-stomping instrumentals.
‘At the time I was struggling under the weight of supporting a partner with their own serious mental health issues, while juggling university, work and finding a place to live. It was an overwhelming time, and so I wrote the song as a kind of cry to (or a way to scream at) a higher power trying to understand the meaning of it all, hence the religious imagery that permeates the song.” – SEB SZABO
Recorded at Purple Wayne Studios in Collingwood with producer Dave Jenkins, Leaning On You (Wrecking Ball) draws sonic inspiration from Coldplay, U2, Billie Eilish, as well as AM-era Arctic Monkeys.
‘The song has had a long journey, but it’s evolved into something super polished without losing any of the teeth or groove it had since its raw beginning,’ Seb explains.
Instantly captivating, Leaning On You (Wrecking Ball) sees sultry vocals anchored with a catchy bassline, building to anthemic chorus boasting kicking percussion and chilling electric guitar. Flawless production creates an otherworldly atmosphere whilst carefully crafted lyricism brings depth and groundedness.
With influences ranging from household names like Bruce Springsteen to modern classics 1975 and Gang of Youths, Seb Szabo is drawn to vulnerability and fearless storytelling above all else.
‘All these acts seemingly have an interest in bringing people together under common truths and helping people feel heard or seen for who they are. There’s a certain selflessness and empathy to their writing that is really inspirational.’
Having already embarked on his national ‘Leaning On Me’ tour, Seb will be landing in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne as well as performing at the Queenscliff Music Festival alongside the likes of Baker Boy, John Butler and Middle Kids, with the release of this arena rock anthem marking the beginning of a captivating new direction for Seb Szabo.
