Gold Coast’s THE RIOT have shared their new single Idea Of You and announce their debut EP ‘HAPPY TEARS!’ will be released on Friday March 31st (out via Island Records Australia/UMA)
As the first track to be revealed from their forthcoming EP, Idea Of You is THE RIOT evolving as humans and taking with them their music. Not driven by any strict thought of what was next, they allowed the next phase in the studio to flow subconsciously.
For Idea Of You, the band’s trademark distorted guitars were put aside, as the duo explored sleek drum n bass beats set to fuzzy vocals from both members JD and Tyler. Produced by triple j unearthed fav, Club Angel, the song was fleshed out in one day in the studio, and found THE RIOT excited by the new sound, club punk, they were creating.
“We try keep our minds open to any ideas that could be interesting and new for us. The vocals happened naturally, we both had so many ideas flowing out of us for this track so it made sense for us to both sing the parts we heard on it. This song suits the diversity between voices, keeps the journey fresh,â€Â shares Tyler. Â
Penned about a doomed relationship, JD says, “You’ll do anything to hold onto the idea of the relationship working out, but you know deep down in your heart that it’s over. We had the whole song fleshed out in a day. We had so many different paths that we could have taken this song but this felt closest to our hearts.â€
Does this mean THE RIOT have stepped away from being politically vocal? Tyler says, “There’s politics in everything. The songs will mean something different to everyone. For us we dove mostly into the politics of relationship so it’s very subjective. Relationships with people, loved ones, ancestors, feelings.â€
Idea Of You is the fifth single from THE RIOT and follows singles, Same Blunt, PISSED, See It Believe It and their 2021 debut Dog In The Shade.  Renowned for their high energy, chaotic live shows, THE RIOT have supported DMA’S, WAAX, Nerve, and completed 2 headline tours and a performance at Big Sound 2022. They have received praise from Blunt Magazine, NME, Happy Magazine, Sniffers, Iggy Magazine and Life Without Andy, with airplay support from triple j, 4ZZZ, FBi Radio and The Faction and videos added to rage and MTV Upload. THE RIOT earned playlist adds to New Music Friday, Rock Out, Listen Local and Local Noise on Spotify, The New Rock, The Riff and New Music Daily on Apple Music, and Alternative Uprising and New Australian Cool on YouTube Music.
Recording now as a duo, THE RIOT, aka Tyler and JD, have confirmed their debut EP was written and recorded over a 2-week period and will feature previously unreleased tracks.
“We stayed honest and true to whatever art form was flowing through us in those moments and we feel more than happy about that,â€Â says JD.
