Adelaide-based indie-rock band, The Tullamarines, are back with their new single, Running On Empty. Known for their heartfelt lyricism and distinct vocal harmonies, the quartet, Josh, Angus, Benny, and Lucinda, blend their unique artistic sensibilities into a cosy-pop experience that feels like a long-awaited catch-up with an old friend.
Having first crossed paths on Adelaide’s bustling gig circuit, the band quickly bonded over their shared love of songwriting, storytelling, and creating music that resonates with intimacy and charm. Their sound transcends the ordinary, offering listeners an authentic glimpse into their lives, the highs, the lows, and everything in between, delivered with the warmth and candidness of a trusted confidante.
With four distinct voices weaving together seamlessly, The Tullamarines craft a rich tapestry of sound that is both inviting and deeply personal. Their music feels like an open invitation into their world, where nostalgia, hope, and raw emotion intertwine effortlessly.
Running On Empty captures a deeply personal moment for frontman Ben Waltho. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the track, he explains: “I’d just had what I’ve come to know as an anxiety attack whilst we were touring, and I was struggling hard. On the flight home, I wrote some pretty horrible stuff in my notes app, and then left it for a bit to try and talk to everyone and get some help. When I had a bit more free space to think, I started to write little songs from those notes, which sparked Running On Empty.” The track is an honest and vulnerable exploration of personal struggles, offering a raw, cathartic insight into Ben’s journey through adversity.
The Tullamarines have received significant recognition across various media platforms. Their track OMG was added to full rotation on triple j, and received a Home & Hosed premiere in October 2024, following a similar premiere for Loser in August 2024. They were also featured as a triple j Unearthed Feature Artist in September 2023 and their single Head Roll Back premiered on Good Nights in October 2023. The band was awarded the triple j Unearthed Laneway Festival Competition in 2024, with I’m So added to triple j Full Rotation in August 2023, alongside a Home & Hosed premiere for the track. Their music has earned prime spots on key playlists including New Music AU & NZ, Indie Arrivals, The Local List, and a Fresh Finds Cover in August 2024, along with New Music Daily and Indie Arrivals.
The Tullamarines have already made waves on the festival circuit with performances at Laneway, Spin Off, and New Year’s Eve On The Hill, and have shared stages with Polish Club, The Vaccines, Everything Everything, Teenage Joans, The Vanns, Rum Jungle, The Buoys, and Stumps. They recently signed with Rob G at Select Music in November 2024. Looking ahead this April and May, they’ll embark on a national headline tour with Puree, followed by more releases to come throughout the year.
