Following their five-date east coast run last month, Toowoomba’s alt rock up-and-comers Cardboard Cutouts are
today excited to announce their debut full-length record, ‘Politics and Footy Tips’. The album is due for release on
Friday 27th June 2025, and is a candid and powerful commentary on anxiety, self-acceptance, and perseverance. Today, the band also share the second single from the record – the hard-hitting and emotional powerhouse Steer.

“‘Steer’ is about trying to back yourself for a better life and trying to seize opportunity for growth, but having seeds of self doubt looming over every decision,” the band explain. “It’s difficult to make big life decisions without feeling like you’re throwing parts of you down the drain and losing control of your life for a little while. ‘Steer’ aims to capture the internal monologue of the anxiety and confusion that comes with that.”

The new release follows Cardboard Cutouts’ previous single My Best Friend, which earned airplay across triple j Unearthed and community radio, plus praise from the likes of Happy Mag, HEAVY, The Pitch of Discontent, Sounds of Oz, Palisade Weekly and more, and an addition to Rage’s weekend music video playlisting.

My Best Friend and Steer are prime examples of the band’s ability to combine gutsy, emotive choruses with introspective, delicate moments – a songwriting trait that weaves its way throughout their forthcoming debut album.

“Every single song on the album has a rich story behind it, and we aimed to highlight this by giving each song its own distinct sound and style,” says Cardboard Cutouts. “We started conceptualising the record at the very beginning of the band, over 5 years ago. It was only when we jumped into the studio with our producer, Harry Verity, at the end of 2023, that things really started coming together. We spent the next 10 months with that legend making what has become ‘Politics and Footy Tips’, and we can’t wait to share it.”

The live stage is where Cardboard Cutouts’ discography truly comes alive, and it’s their exhilarating, community-building performances that have seen them grow from playing school events to sharing stages with the likes of Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Greta Stanley, Vera Blue, Concrete Surfers, and more. Last month, Cardboard Cutouts embarked on their first ever interstate tour in support of My Best Friend, performing five shows across Brisbane (their first ticketed headliner, where they sold almost 150 tickets), Toowoomba, Melbourne, Canberra, and Newcastle.

From the sunny DIY energy of their debut single Such Is Life, to the textured and rich sound of 2023’s Patchwork EP and delicate fan-favourite Grandma’s Curtains, Cardboard Cutouts have moved from strength to strength.
