Born in the heat of Arnhem Land, punk quartet Mertas (FKA Mr Chrisy Mertas) have established themselves as one of the hardest working bands on the Northern Territory scene – performing at festivals like Bass In The Grass and East Arnhem Live and self-releasing two albums – most recently 2025’s ‘So Far From Punk’. Now the band make a triumphant return with scrappy new single No Show.
“‘No Show’ is a tongue-in-cheek anthem for anyone who’s ever said “Yeah, I’ll be there for sure” while already horizontal in bed,” explains vocalist Matt McLean. “Built around the hook, “You can count on me to be a no-show,” the track leans into the classic Aussie habit of overcommitting socially and under-delivering.”
Beneath its humour and crowd-chant invitations, No Show captures the messiness of self-sabotage and social burnout, painting a raw picture of isolation. While the track seemingly laughs off the idea of ghosting, it presents a subtle cry for help and explored the guilt of letting down your friends for reasons beyond your control.
Having built a reputation through relentless gigging across the Territory, Mertas continue to cement their place as one of Northern Australia’s most authentic voices on the punk scene – loud, self-aware and proudly rough around the edges. With No Show, the band are at their honest best – chaotic, but more importantly – real.
