Emerging from a year-and-a-bit of extensive touring, identity-shaping writing sessions, reflection and reconnection, Aotearoa-raised band Bakers Eddy have today released their bright and nostalgic new single Manners Street, out now via ADA.

The first taste of their forthcoming EP due out later this year, Manners Street is a deeply reflective autobiographical ode to the now Naarm-based outfit’s New Zealand hometown, and arrives ahead of their upcomig appearances at SXSW Austin next month. As Ngati Porou Ngati Tuwharetoa frontman Ciarann Babbington reveals, “‘Manners Street’ is almost a tribute to OUR Wellington, the one we grew up in, our experiences, our people and the places.”

Manners Street arrives as a cathartic and, in many ways, crucial song for the band as they found themselves
searching for belonging in the wake of their acclaimed 2022 album ‘Love Boredom Bicycles’ (Ivy League) and the busy touring schedules that followed – from their own headline national run, to stints supporting Grandson (CA), Maggie Lindemann (USA), Stand Atlantic and WAAX.

“The four of us spent a long time last year reconnecting with each other and one of the things that came out as a result was this shared feeling of being a little lost in ourselves and who we are,” Ciarann reflects. “Through those
conversations, we realised a big part of that was we’ve been away for so long now that we’ve, in a way, forgotten our
roots. Writing ‘Manners Street’ felt like a way to reconnect from far away, not only with our memories but with that part of ourselves that was missing. It’s also special to us because all four of us are connected lyrically to it. They’re our shared stories and memories (aside from the parking lot one, that’s just for me), so in a way it’s the most ‘Bakers Eddy’ Bakers Eddy song we’ve made so far.”

The new single and upcoming EP were self-produced alongside Vincent McIntyre (Fan Girl / Mr Industry / Elizabeth M. Drummond), mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend / The Strokes / Weezer), and mastered by Emily Lazar (Foo Fighters / Coldplay / Sia).
