Blade Hooper is a Meanjin/Brisbane based artist, guitarist, singer-songwriter, and producer. Drawing influence from Radiohead, Bon Iver, John Mayer, and Deftones, he blends expressive guitar work with confessional songwriting and atmospheric, groove-focused production. Across his work, Blade explores themes of mental health, trauma, and relationships, with a sonically adventurous approach that continues to evolve.
Off the back of his hometown headline shows following the release of In My Head, Blade returns with his next single, Station – a groove-led, R&B-influenced track blending warm, off-kilter production with melodic songwriting and experimental guitar textures. Built on rhythmic slap bass and baritone guitar lines, and inspired by artists like Mk.gee and Still Woozy, Station blends smooth, laid-back grooves and bursts of heavier, distorted guitar energy.
Blade talks about the inspirations behind the lyrics of Station: “’Station’ began with the idea of trying to connect with someone emotionally but never quite finding the same frequency. I wanted the production to reflect that feeling, building a song around a funky mid-tempo groove with layered guitars, rhythmic textures and experimental sounds that create a sense of movement and tension reflecting the push/pull dynamic of the kind of yearning I was writing about. The track blends alternative R&B, indie soul and alternative pop & rock influences, with the arrangement growing into a bigger, more energetic bridge as the emotional release of the song.”
