Today, Cub Sport announce their biggest headline Australian tour yet, hitting stages across the country throughout August and September. The announcement arrives ahead of this week’s release of ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’ – the band’s hotly anticipated fifth album, out on Good Friday, April 7.
Supported by triple j, Cub Sport‘s national tour will kick off at Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on August 18, followed by stops at Perth’s Astor Theatre on August 19, and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on August 24. After performing at Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns on August 31, the band will return to their hometown of Brisbane, to play at The Fortitude Music Hall on September 2, before closing out the run of shows at Melbourne’s Forum, on September 8.
For their entire career, Cub Sport have been searching for some kind of absolution. To listen to the Brisbane band’s music is to see a process of unburdening and unlearning in slow motion: their four albums to date plot a progression away from shame and towards joy, celebration and pure euphoria. Out this Good Friday, April 7, ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’ sees Cub Sport finally reach that point of ecstatic lightness, or at least somewhere close to it. Using the language of bright, crystalline dance music as shorthand for a kind of hard-won spiritual freedom, ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’ finds the four-piece – Tim Nelson, Sam Netterfield, Zoe Davis and Dan Puusaari – largely shedding hangups and celebrating love and life in all its manifestations.
Having graced stages at Laneway, Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, 2020’s AFL Grand Final, and Summer Camp, Cub Sport are renowned for their electrifying live performances. Since their emergence in the early-2010s, the self-managed and self-released Meanjin-based act have captivated an avid following with their vulnerable, yet self-confident, output of progressive indie-pop. A national favourite, the band have landed in triple j’s Hottest 100 five times, and have seen praise from The Guardian, BBC Radio 1, Rolling Stone, Billboard, i-D, VICE, Gay Times, The FADER and more.
Secure your spot on the dance floor at Cub Sport‘s upcoming Australian tour, as they prepare to unveil the blissful euphoria that is ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’ this Friday.
