Ipswich-based country, blues and roots songwriterย Damien J. Johnson has just released the debut self-titled album from The Damien J. Johnson Band.

Featuring nine original tracks, the album brings together a collection of songs that reflect Johnson’s distinctive approach to country, blues and roots music, while capturing the energy and imperfections of a band playing together in the same room.

The album features the previously released singlesย Lappinโ€™, Wacol Station andย I Donโ€™t Listen To The Radio,ย giving listeners a taste of what to expect from the full-length release.

The recordings were made atย Studio Oโ€™Keefe in Ipswich, with the band taking a deliberately old-school approach to the sessions. Rather than relying on click tracks, extensive overdubbing or heavily programmed production, the tracks were recorded live, in single takes, allowing the musicians to respond naturally to one another and preserving the human feel of the performances.

For Johnson, that approach is central to the album. โ€œI wanted this record to sound like a band playing together, rather than a collection of individual parts assembled in a computer,โ€ says Johnson. โ€œThere are little imperfections, little moments where the band reacts to each other, and thatโ€™s exactly what I wanted to capture. Those are the things that make a recording feel aliveโ€ฆand more importantly, human.โ€

The album follows a run of successful singles for Johnson, withย Lappinโ€™ย receiving an Apple Music editorial playlist placement andย Wacol Stationย earning attention from ABC Country. Most recently,ย I Donโ€™t Listen To The Radioย was released across streaming platforms and Triple J Unearthed and added to an Apple Music editorial playlist.

Across its nine tracks, the debut album explores the familiar territory of country and roots music โ€” stories of place, people, relationships, memory and everyday Australian life โ€” while retaining the loose, earthy character that has become a defining part of Johnsonโ€™s sound.

The album also represents an important milestone for an artist who has steadily built his audience through live performances across South East Queensland and beyond. Withย The Damien J. Johnson Band, Johnson has developed a sound that combines traditional country and blues influences with a distinctly contemporary Australian perspective.
