One of Australia’s most prolific songwriters, entertainers and musicians, Don Spencer (OAM), has announced the release of his new single Hold On To Your Dream.
The song was written for a disadvantaged young girl, 14 or 15 years old, whom Don was helping to cope with a very troubled life – she was in a class and learning music through his charity, Australian Children’s Music Foundation.
Don says “When I talk with troubled young people, I talk about resilience and determination in the face of adversity. I also encourage them to set goals and not give up. Persistence and determination will win in the end. If you have a dream, you have to pursue it and not let anything get in the way. The young girl asked me to explain what I meant by this, and I realised that the only way I could explain it, was to write a song about my own very difficult childhood and journey to reach my dream.”
The inspiration that came for the song is the core of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation which Don founded in 2002. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that uses the power of music to inspire and enrich the lives of Australian children and youth, particularly the disadvantaged and Indigenous. The ACMF provides free tuition and instruments and has programs in every state in Australia, including Juvenile Detention centres, disadvantaged schools in cities and remote areas and Indigenous schools and communities. The ACMF also conducts the National songwriting competition that is open to every school in Australia.
Hold On To Your Dream is available through ABC Music and will be the first of many from Don’s upcoming album, which is slated for release later this year.
