Having spent the last year lighting up stages alongside internationals like Frank Turner (UK) and Tiny Moving Parts (USA), Sydney/Gadigal emo-revival quartet Great Job! now proudly reveal their debut album ‘Love and Feel Love’.
A cathartic journey through self-analysis, battles with mental health and finding your place in the world, ‘Love and Feel Love’ sees the band at their most sincere – toeing the line between punk infused crowd chants and moments of unfiltered tenderness. As vocalist Charlie Hollands confesses: “The whole album essentially revolves around a question I ask myself every day: ‘My life is good, isn’t it? I’m living comfortably with the person I love, so why am I so sad?’”
Using self-deprecating humour as the ultimate defence mechanism, Great Job! create an infectious world that finds light in some of life’s most challenging moments. Charlie’s unmistakably Australian vocals effortlessly range from scratchy to falsetto, while the band’s rhythm section in bassist Nat Jones and drummer Nick Cranch anchor each track with commanding force. Guitarist James Vermeesch – who produced and mixed the album – balances these moments of anxiety and clarity with precision.
Equally compelling are the album’s song titles. Tracks like Take Your Meds is named after the alarm that buzzes on Charlie’s phone every morning, while the band wear their inspiration on their sleeve with Get Sad, Stay Home – a nod to Get Sad, See Mates by Luca Brasi and The Smith Street Band’s Get High, See Mice – an ode to low social batteries and enjoying the comfort of your own bedroom.
Final single Falling Of The Vigour sees the band venture into darker territory sonically, with vivid imagery that imagines emotions as characters to villainise them. It’s a bold moment on the record where Great Job! lean into the shadows and embrace the murky moments as part of the journey.
On the other side of the spectrum, album closer Goodbye Betelgeuse takes its name from the red supergiant star set to eventually explode into supernova – gloriously lighting the night sky before disappearing forever. “I suppose there’s a sense of trying vs giving up,” concludes Charlie. “Even though we all die eventually, it sure as hell matters the way we go.”
Great Job! will launch ‘Love and Feel Love’ in Brisbane and Melbourne, followed by a mammoth run of shows including support slots with friends The Smith Street Band and Suzi. Expect high emotions, fists in the air and a crowd of voices singing arm in arm in unison.
