Eora/Sydney-based newcomer House of Strangers has just revealed his entrancing debut release Many Faces – produced and mixed by Peter Holz (Peking Duk, Gang of Youths, Vance Joy).
House of Strangers is the new solo project from Liam Sinclair, former lead guitarist of Eora/Sydney indie-pop band 90ivy / The Flowers. Created in collaboration with long-time friend Ethan Munn and sister Chloe, Many Faces blends alt-pop, indie rock and electronic textures to create a rich sonic landscape.
Lyrically, the track explores the quiet fear of being truly seen – and the tension between who we are and who we pretend to be. “From family and friends to passing strangers, we shift and shape ourselves to fit the moment, often without even realising it,” explains Sinclair. “‘Many Faces’ explores the quiet fear that if people saw every side of us, they might no longer relate, connect or care.”
The accompanying video – directed by Lewis Clark and Loz Maneschi, and produced by MICA Studios – uses morphing visuals and layered ‘clones’ to reflect fractured identity and inner dialogue. Sinclair adds, “The main idea of the clip was to visually represent the multiple sides of ourselves, and the different ways we present to the people around us. We used scenes where I morphed between the three clones, using a technique called ‘onion skinning’, to show how one person can have multiple personas.”
Taking inspiration from luminaires Alex G, Radiohead, and Dijon, House of Strangers blends elements of jazz, alternative and electronic music, combining concept-driven storytelling with a sound that sticks with you. As an Honours graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sinclair treats the studio as an instrument in its own right – a space to manipulate sound and push beyond traditional songwriting.
