Interpol have released their new album ‘This Mirror Weighs A Ton’, their first in four years and debut for Partisan Records. Produced by Grammy and Oscar-winning producer Andrew Wyatt (ROSALÍA, Charli xcx) and mixed by David Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), the album arrives at a remarkable moment for a band approaching three decades together: playing the biggest shows of their career, reaching a new generation of listeners and continuing to find new possibilities within their unmistakable sound.
Alongside the album, Interpol share a fresh video for the focus track Wings On Fire. Built around the classic interplay of bass and guitar that has long been central to the band’s music, the song pairs that familiar tension with some of Paul Banks’ most vivid imagery on the record. “Wings on fire is the reason why,” he sings over the song’s driving pulse, before returning to the searching refrain, “I’m gonna find out who you are.”
The album has been met with a wave of major press, earning this week’s Double J’s Feature Album of The Week, plus career-spanning interviews and profiles from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and GQ, each looking at where Interpol find themselves twenty five years into their career and the creative momentum behind ‘This Mirror Weighs A Ton’. The album has also earned early praise from Pitchfork and NPR Music. ‘This Mirror Weighs A Ton’ was recorded at Wyatt’s studio on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Arcos, marking the first time Interpol had made an album in their original home base. The sessions brought the band back to where they first took shape while opening their music outward, introducing strings, woodwind, acoustic guitars, layered vocals, synthesisers and experimental sound design without losing the restraint, atmosphere and rhythmic precision that have always defined Interpol. An overall spirit of expansion runs throughout the record.
See Out Loud channels the sharp, propulsive energy of the band’s earliest work while featuring a rare vocal turn from Daniel Kessler; So Rides The Reindeer became the first Interpol song built around acoustic guitar; Wake Up introduces an unexpectedly playful percussive pulse; and the sparse, piano-driven Sudden brings the album to a gripping close. Throughout the creative relationship between Banks, Kessler and Sam Fogarino remains at its centre, now joined by longtime touring bassist Brad Truax, who played and wrote on an Interpol album for the first time. The record arrives during a period of remarkable momentum for Interpol. In April 2024, the band played the largest show of their career to more than 200,000 people at Mexico City’s Zócalo, while streaming has reached an all-time high and a new generation of listeners continues to discover their music.
Earlier this year, they toured Australia alongside Deftones, plus returned to Coachella playing the festival for a fifth time, previewing new material including See Out Loud and Wings On Fire. That same forward motion runs through ‘This Mirror Weighs A Ton’: as Interpol’s audience and reach continue to grow, the band themselves remain just as interested in pushing outward, finding new possibilities within a sound they’ve spent nearly three decades defining.
