After making waves with their 2023 single F With Me, which earned the band underground recognition across Europe’s punk and alternative scenes – Adelaide’s pub-punk powerhouse Jon Ann now return with raucous new single, Kings Cup.
Inspired by the chaotic drinking game of the same name, Kings Cup is a scathing tribute to the thrill of being young, loud and unapologetically reckless. Filled to the brim with raw energy and feminist punk edge, the track perfectly captures the unfiltered joy of a classic house party and the existential dread that often accompanies.
“‘Kings Cup’ is a love letter to Aussie house parties and those sticky, beer-drenched floors filled with drama and chaos,” explains the band. “Someone’s crying in the laundry, someone else is bleeding and the music is too loud for anyone to actually talk about what matters.”
“It’s also a big F U to any buzz kill or pretentious individual at a house party. If you’re not here for a good time you can walk straight out the door.”
The track’s music video, directed by Krem Belyovska, replays the messy party that sparked frontwoman Christie to begin penning the track’s lyrics. Still hungover at rehearsal the next day, she launched into a rant about how nights like these feel like an exhausting ritual – all noise and no emotional connection.
From the scribbles in her phone notes, a new beer-soaked anthem was born. Recorded with Lachy Pitcher (Coldwave, TOWNS), mixed by ARIA-award-winning engineer Anton Hagop (Powderfinger, Silverchair) and mastered by George Georgiadis, Kings Cup channels the ferocious charm of bands like Amyl & The Sniffers and The Chats to deliver a knockout blow that has quickly become a crowd favourite at live shows.
Armed with an ever-growing repertoire filled with blistering guitar riffs and choruses designed to be sung arm-in-arm, Jon Ann are quickly becoming one of the most fearlessly female led bands to emerge from an already exciting South Australian scene.
