Seventeen-year-old Gomeroi singer-songwriter Kyla Belle continues her rapid rise with the release of her powerful new single, Took A Turn, featuring acclaimed Indigenous artist Nooky (3%). Crowned the 2025 Triple J Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative winner, Kyla’s latest offering marks another bold step forward for one of Australia’s most exciting emerging voices.

A rumbling, country-flavoured anthem with an undeniable hook, Took A Turn was born out of what was initially intended to be a mentorship session through Kyla’s Unearthed High prize. Instead, the collaboration quickly evolved into a dynamic creative partnership between two generations of influential Indigenous artists, culminating in a track that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

“This song tells the story of my life and how things always take a turn for the better,” Kyla shares. “It talks about hardships, then overcoming them through music. I wrote this song just like I write all my music, on my bedroom floor, aiming for a song that sticks to your brain.”

Recorded in Sydney earlier this year, the single captures Kyla’s signature storytelling and raw authenticity, elevated by Nooky’s unmistakable presence. The track was produced by Z and Fabien Bethuizeau, mixed by Michael Freeman, and mastered by Don Bartley, delivering a polished yet grounded sound that stays true to Kyla’s roots.

Building on the momentum of her previous single Sweetheart which landed Triple J Unearthed Track of the Day and secured key editorial playlist support across Spotify and Apple Music, Took A Turn has already hit the ground running, earning immediate adds to both Triple J and Triple J Unearthed upon release. The single has also made an impressive impact across streaming platforms, landing on Spotify’s Big Ancestor Energy (debuting at #1 with Kyla as cover artist) and Heaps Country playlists, alongside Apple Music’s New Music Daily, Country Risers, New in Country and Australia’s Country editorial playlists.

Kyla’s trajectory over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable. Alongside national radio support, she was recognised with the Outstanding Achievement in Creative and Performing Arts Award at the 2025 Nanga Mai Awards, further cementing her place as a rising force in the Australian music landscape.

Balancing school at Moree Secondary College with a demanding performance schedule, Kyla remains deeply connected to her community and roots. Each weekend, she fronts her family band featuring her dad on guitar, mum on keys, and cousin on drums, touring throughout the Northern Rivers and regional New South Wales, honing her craft in front of live audiences.

With her debut EP set for release in June 2026, Took A Turn offers a compelling glimpse into what’s to come. Fans can also catch Kyla live later this year when she takes the stage at Savannah In The Round this October.

Honest, heartfelt, and full of promise, Kyla Belle is an artist whose journey is only just beginning, and if Took A Turn is any indication, it’s a path set firmly in the right direction.
