Rising Melbourne-based electro-pop artist LASHES returns today with her moody and utterly addictive new single, Avalanche For You.
LASHES’ newest offering sees her team up once again with frequent collaborator Michael Belsar (Hayden James / Bob Moses) to craft another cinematic, hyperpop-influenced gem. Originally written in 2022 under the title Final Fantasy, the initial concept was, as LASHES reveals, “about being stuck in an RPG video game set in a sci-fi universe where you have to work together to make it to the end, only to be slaughtered on a hill by your partner – which was somewhat foretelling.”
After revisiting and rewriting the song’s lyrics and production earlier this year, the story evolved into an exploration of the feelings that arise from becoming addicted to toxic cycles, and the unsettling impact they have. “Sonically, we wanted it to emulate ‘fight or flight’, the anxiety of walking on eggshells and the confusion you feel when living in a skewed version of reality”, LASHES said.
Avalanche For You was produced and mixed by Belsar, and mastered by Cam Trewin (Rüfüs Du Sol), with additional vocal production by Jackson McRae (Holy Holy / George Alice). It arrives as LASHES’ second release of 2024, following her previous track Hollow released in February. Hollow was remixed for triple j’s On Ya Bike live stream and aired on ABC News Breakfast, plus played across SYN, triple j, and triple j Unearthed. In the months following release, LASHES performed at the Ballarat leg of Homegrown Festival alongside the likes of Slowly Slowly, The Getaway Plan, and Kisschasy, plus Ballarat’s White Night.
LASHES’ 2023 releases, Call Me When You Land and Make Your Move, both clocked airplay on triple j’s Home & Hosed program, with Make Your Move landing an addition to Unearthed radio. The tracks were supported by Fashion Journal, Happy Mag, Forte Magazine, Something You Said, Eat This Music, AAA Backstage and more, and followed an incredible eighteen months for LASHES – from making her live debuts to sold-out crowds in both Melbourne and Ballarat, to appearing at Spilt Milk and Groovin The Moo and opening for the likes of Boo Seeka, Cry Club, and I Know Leopard.
