Emerging indie-folk-rock outfit Littlefair are turning up the volume with their brand-new single, Jacket, a high-energy alt-rock anthem packed with nostalgia, angst, and infectious melodies.
Littlefair has quickly made a name for themselves in the West Australian music scene, performing at WAMFest Scarbs Beach Party 2023, being a top 20 finalist in both the Folk and Rock categories at the 2024 WAM Song of the Year Awards, playing Beats in the Bay Festival (supporting Sly Withers) in Shark Bay 2024, and winning the Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2024 Nannup Music Festival.
Inspired by the golden era of 2000s and early 2010s rock, their latest track nods to bands like Paramore, Yellowcard, and Tonight Alive while staying true to the rich harmonies and folk-rock sensibilities that define Littlefair’s sound.
“Jacket is about all the feelings that come with a new crush—when you don’t know if they feel the same, and it’s scary and exhilarating at the same time,” explains co-writer Jessica Depiazzi. “We wanted to capture that rush, where you’re trying to find reasons to spend time together–like stealing jackets and sneaking into house parties you heard they might be at. The lyrics are teenage and fun, but I think the core of wanting to be loved is universal.”
Lead songwriter Mary Depiazzi adds, “I don’t know how to flirt with people. I would like to see this person again, but heaven forbid I have to ask them like a normal human.” That playful tension runs through Jacket as driving guitars, soaring harmonies, and a huge singalong chorus deliver an adrenaline-fueled burst of emotion.
The song itself came together in an unexpected way – Jessica and Mary both brought song fragments to rehearsal, only to realise they were in the same key with similar chord progressions. “Obviously, we had to mash them together,” laughs Jessica. From that foundation, Mary fleshed out the full track while the band workshopped their signature four-part harmonies, and drummer Gareth Peach arranged the layered, high-energy final chorus.
Recording at Crank Studios with Lee Buddle, the band took a hands-on approach to crafting Jacket’s dynamic sound. “Lee set up the microphones in a circle so we could record the vocal harmonies live together, which gave it such a fun energy,” says Jessica. The last thing they recorded? A gang vocal outro featuring not just the band, but a few friends and partners who happened to be around. “We all shouted the last lines together in the studio—it was the perfect way to wrap up a few intense days of recording,” Jessica recalls.
