Second Idol, one of the most important artists to be emerging out of Australia’s alternative scene, have released their crushing new single Spineless Wonders through Gloomshift Records.
A seething critique of unchecked power and deception by those in authority, the track marks another highpoint in the band’s discography; honest, menacing and inescapable.
Carrying the torch of unapologetic songwriting pioneers like Placebo, Sonic Youth, Siouxsie and The Banshees, PJ Harvey, Savages, and The Cure, Second Idol channel that same unrelenting originality and bold innovation to create music that is both a sonic force and a critical lens. Their music becomes a vehicle to explore ideas of power, gender, and identity, while exposing the dark undercurrents of systemic control and social manipulation.
“It began as a slinking and syncopated gothic instrumental,” explains singer and guitarist Kate Farquharson. “There was something sinister and sinuous about it. I began penning lyrics that twisted through the melody, alluding to power, control and corruption”.
Inherent to the song is a critique of the Spineless Wonder, which can be interpreted as a cowardly spectacle or the ill repute of individual cowardice. In the song, the people regarded as ‘spineless’ are politicians and individuals in exploitative positions of power. Here, the individual is void of consequence, and through corruption proceeds to ‘wander free’.
Second Idol is a band born from the intersection of identity, ideology, and sound. With members Kate (Sri Lankan/Scottish), Sunny Josan (Palestinian/Indian), and Afeef Iqbal (Pakistani), all second-generation Australians, the group embodies the strength of cultural hybridity and lived experience. Their diversity across gender identities, sexualities, and backgrounds informs their art and crafts the message.
Spineless Wonders was produced, mixed and mastered by Clayton Segelov. It was recorded by Segelov and Angie Watson at The Brain Recording Studios, Sydney. The track is being released alongside a remix created by labelmates INAUGURAL.
Second Idol’s music has received praise from the likes of Post-punk.com, The Music, Backseat Mafia, The AU Review, Music Feeds, AAA Backstage, Wall Of Sound, NME and The Guardian. They have also earned a reputation for their striking live set, playing slots at King Street Crawl, Vivid Sydney, and TRANSGENRE festivals and supporting The Murder Capital (IRL), Baxter Dury (UK), Jen Cloher, Arse, Battlesnake, Cry Club, Teenage Joans and Harry Howard.
