Fresh from shows with heavyweights like Magic Dirt and Regurgitator, Adelaide’s most lovable post-punk outfit, Street Legal today unveil their energetic new single Cardio.
Partly inspired by the Roxane Gay quote, “I don’t hate myself in the way society would have me hate myself,” Cardio fiercely challenges unrealistic body standards, with vocalist Matt Hayward exuding a powerful sense of self-worth despite societal pressures. The expertly timed drum and synth sequences amplify the song’s themes of self-confidence, making Cardio a surefire way to get the blood pumping.
“Cardio is a response to feeling a bit disillusioned with society, my own personal agency and the pressures of life in general,” explains Matt. “When I was writing the song at the time I was reading a lot of vitriol online directed at a certain pop singer about her body size and her choice to feel and be comfortable in her own skin.”
Recorded with Matt Shultz (The Empty Threats, Twine) at Interim Studios and mixed with GRAMMY award-winning engineer Hugo Nicolson (Radiohead, Father John Misty), Cardio showcases Street Legal’s ability to blend sounds from the past and the future to create thought provoking art. Drawing inspiration from new wave, synth-pop, and post-punk genres, the band prove that music with a bold message can still be irresistibly fun.
“We were inspired to work with Hugo in particular due to his amazing production work on Primal Scream’s ‘XTRMNTR’ album, a personal favourite,” beams Matt. “He has also worked with Bjork which is kind of iconic for us as insatiable music heads. The single was mastered by the unflappable Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (Amyl & the Sniffers, King Gizzard).“
Street Legal officially launch Cardio in their hometown at The Grace Emily on Friday September 27 with support from Eli & The Truth and Flowerbed. Tickets on sale now.
