Many-headed Brisbane garage rock behemoth Velociraptor recently announced their ‘Don’t Hiat-us, Hate The Game’ East Coast farewell tour, and to celebrate the bittersweet occasion have released one final single, Rita, from their epic second album ‘Computer Future’.
After too many years at the coalface to mention, the ‘Raptors are quitting on their own terms (i.e., with one last blast of parties with their many friends and fans), and it seems appropriate that they’re doing so accompanied by one of their catchiest songs to date in Rita.
Frontman Jeremy Neale – Rita’s author and vocalist – had this to say about the track, which continues their tradition of ludicrously catchy songs with female names as the title:
“Rita was the first song I wrote for this record. Is it a poetic way to finish the album cycle? I dunno. I mean in the grand scheme of all eras of all raptor releases – it came down to this – a love letter to someone. Suzanne, Cynthia, Ramona, now Rita.
“Like all reasonable songs, the overarching theme is there in the chorus “You get further away, the more I do”. You’ll probably detect the other overarching theme across most songs I write – shit is absolutely cooked on the hustle. You gotta work more to get from survive to thrive, but what do you lose along the way? “And every night I am so tense”? Well, it’s probably the coffee but how else you gonna get through?
“The track worked through the ‘Raptor machine, which is where it truly came to life. The gang vox in the verse breaks and chorus, the relentless driving intensity of George Browning on the drums. And there’s something magical Julien James has done in the chorus where we got all the lift of a symphony, via an electric guitar. Velociraptor AKA Brisbane Symphony Guitar Orchestra”.
Saying farewell is always tough, but at least this goodbye comes complete with a killer soundtrack! Don’t miss this one last chance to make dusty memories with the ‘Raptors, sometimes you don’t realise how much you love something until it’s gone!
