Meanjin alt-rock quintet Worm Girlz have gone from strength-to-strength with each release since their 2023 debut single Dirt – building a tight-knit community through their immersive, theatrical live show and brutally unflinching lyricism. Now the band return with Get Ugly – an infectious, queer anthem that brushes off toxic beauty standards and celebrates being utterly authentic.
Set to arrive during Pride Month, the timing of this release couldn’t feel more personal for the band. As proud members of the queer community, Worm Girlz are a fierce voice for their circle – just as ready to celebrate them as they are to fight for their representation.
On the release, the band share: “‘Get Ugly’ is a queer anthem and while LGBTQIA+ rights are being threatened across the world, we felt compelled to shed the shame and unapologetically be loud and proud this pride month.”
Driven by surf-rock inspired backing vocals that lead into a cathartic chorus, Get Ugly is the embodiment of freedom – letting it all hang out without shame or fear. Worm Girlz tear through each verse with a fun-fuelled confidence, asking the all important question: “who are we doing this for?”. Whether it’s feeling the need to shave off every inch of body hair, or wearing makeup to feel worthy, the band deliver a liberating message that none of this defines who you really are.
Speaking on the song’s inspiration, vocalist Lauren says: “As I grew up and learned how to fit in with the world I believed my self-worth came down to one question… how appealing am I to men? I hated myself because men didn’t find me hot enough. UHH WTF?!?”
Produced by long-time collaborator Lucas Montgomery, Get Ugly embodies the sheer beauty of a Worm Girlz live set – dramatic vocal deliveries, soaring guitar work and a chorus that invites crowd participation. It’s a song designed to be shouted in unison and sigh in harmonious relief and when the band all sing together, it is impossible not to join in.
Fresh off a national tour with UK anti-folk outfit, Crywank, the band will next headline Black Bear Lodge to celebrate the release of Get Ugly – along with a series of interstate shows in August. With a growing catalogue of hard-hitting, unfiltered releases, Get Ugly further solidifies Worm Girlz as one of the most important voices in the country – and we should all be listening.
