Lebanese/Australian alt-pop artist YAGKI has unveiled her melancholic single, Just A Ghost – produced by Nico Scali (Loretta, jnr.) and mixed by James Guido (LAU, Lucy Sugerman).
Just A Ghost unfolds with indie-rock-coloured guitars, glistening pop synths and heartfelt vocals that gracefully transition into an ethereal pre-chorus, elevating the lyrics’ emotional resonance. The warm, nostalgic instrumentation swells into a climactic finale, ascending with unwavering spirit and intensity.
YAGKI talks about the inspiration behind Just A Ghost: “Just A Ghost is about the disparity and guilt I feel growing up in housing commission and now living close to the city. It’s about me leaving home at 16 to craft a better path for myself, and the feeling that no matter what I do, I’ll always be trying not to drown from the guilt of leaving, whilst my family still live in severe hardship.”
Pairing the release is the emotionally driven music video directed/filmed by Max Pasalic (BESTIES). Starring YAGKI, her younger sister Ella Yagki and short VHS cuts of the artist herself as a kid, the video weaves through moments of reminiscence and introspection. Drawing set inspiration from the television series The Vampire Diaries, the various scenes artfully capture the profound feelings of isolation that accompany feelings of being haunted by your own past.
In the live scene, YAGKI has previously shared the stage with acts such as Lotte Gallagher, RARIA, Joan & The Giants, Jewel Owusu, jnr., Butter Bath, Archie, Sophian and Mac The Knife.
Previous releases have been widely embraced by Apple Music, triple j, triple j Unearthed, Atwood Magazine (USA), Backseat Mafia (UK/AUS), The Music, Tone Deaf, The AU Review, Music Feeds, LivewireAU, AAA Backstage and Something You Said. YAGKI has also had multiple videos added to MTV.
