When larger-than-life Brisbane garage rockers Velociraptor returned from a lengthy period of dormant contemplation in late-2023 with the concurrent release of singles Leaving Hollywood and Timebong – their first new music in seven years – the diverse but complementary charms of the two bangers merely hinted at the ambitious and grandiose scope of the band’s impending third album, ‘Computer Future’.
Now the third offering from their return opus – co-title track Computer Future Part 1 – hammers home the record’s depth and complexity even further, the robotically-mesmerising explosion of innovative ennui showcasing yet another side to the multi-talented ‘Raptors!
Technology has been playing an increasingly prominent role in our lives for decades now, but is the world we’ve found ourselves in today everything we were promised.
So ask Velociraptor on the rollicking Computer Future Part 1, channelling the jubilant euphoria of Devo at their most upbeat and quirky but dragging it from the ‘80s into the ‘20s and casting it in their own shape via a liberal abundance of hooks and trademark gang vocals.
Computer Future Part 1 was penned by ‘Raptors frontman Jeremy Neale but it was drummer George Browning who deftly stepped up to the plate in the studio to perfectly deliver the song’s automaton vocals – equal parts frightening and enlightening!
In further exciting news the full quorum of Velociraptor will be playing a hometown single launch for Computer Future Part 1 on Saturday 30 March at Felons Barrel Hall, with support from fellow Meanjin party-starters Square! And – in an all-too-rare win for the good guys in these tough economic times – it’s completely free! No dollars a ticket!
Times may seem bleak right now, but you can sleep tight in the knowledge that Velociraptor are back and on the case!
