Recently announced on the Bigsound 2022 lineup and making waves with their exuberant stage presence and unapologetic indie-rock flair, Brisbane / Gold Coast-based outfit Girl and Girl are back today with their newest single Divorce 2 and theatrical music video accompaniment – premiering on YOUTUBE from 5:30pm.
Celebrated for their distinctive approach to their genre that matches sonic sophistication, rollicking rock moments, intergenerational influences and stirring lyricism, Girl and Girl are delivering intense vulnerability in their newest track, which explores fraught family relationships and repressed emotions.
“On the way to the beach one day when I was 16, mum pulled over the car and told me and my sister that dad and her were getting a divorce†says lead vocalist Kai James. “Divorce 2 speaks a lot to my relationship with my father at that time, things I felt and things I wish I had said.â€
Dripping with emotion, Divorce 2 moves with a slow-dancing intensity as measured percussion and languid riffs pave the way for Kai’s decadent vocals, before upping the pace in the chorus with jangly Girl and Girl-styled indie-rock.
Paired with a theatrical music video directed by Tayla Lauren Ralph, the track’s visuals expertly convey the song’s meaning through absurdly light-hearted imagery and some endearing quirk, as Kai explains: “The original concept is inspired by the final scene in the film ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’. I really loved the idea of juxtaposing the pure emotion and desperation in the lyrics and the music with a children’s puppet sat on my hand. Here we are, singing our hearts out about some of the most difficult parts of our lives, and one of us is a lookalike vampire puppet.â€Â
Director Tayla adds: “The motivation for Divorce 2 for me was contrast and pushing the limits of absurdity… As we begin to build tension, I wanted everything to feel like a funhouse mirror – you’re seeing everything from the opposite perspective, emotionally vulnerable and a little unhinged.â€
Once again seeing Girl and Girl team up with frequent collaborator Alistair Richardson (Clea, Zefereli, The Cairos), Divorce 2 marks the final single release ahead of Girl and Girl’s upcoming EP ‘Divorce’, scheduled to drop in late September.
