Building impressively upon music released so far in 2023, in Compromise and Emily, Melbourne’s MID CITY have returned to further tease the release of their long-awaited debut album ‘Happy Ever After’, with the reveal of the album’s title track.
The single Happy Ever After (also the album opener) is a standout of the record as a whole – jam packed with energy and demonstrating MID CITY’s powerful hold over anthemic rhythms and euphoric vocals and melodies.
For a track that sounds as big and bright as Happy Ever After, MID CITY came up against some hurdles when it came to writing the track and getting it to its final form. Working with Greg Rietwyk (Press Club) in Melbourne, the track was eventually cracked, leading to an overwhelming sense of satisfaction within the group.
In its final form, Happy Ever After is a song primed to go off in a live space.
“Happy Ever After took us, no joke, two years to write. It was a COVID lockdown demo that was kicking around in 17 different versions and we just couldn’t crack it. It wasn’t until we completely rethought what a MID CITY song could be that it came together. And when it did finally come together it was the most satisfying feeling we’ve ever had from making music. It has become the flag bearer for the whole album. In a funny kind of poetic way it sums up so much of what the band has been for us – always struggling and striving and hoping we can break out of our own situations and make something worth all of that.” – MID CITY
The release of MID CITY’s debut album has been a long time in the making, dropping after a couple of years spent refining and defining their sound both in studio and on stages in Australia and abroad. Since the release of the band’s first EP’s ‘Die Waiting’ (2019) and ‘Wishing For The Best’ (2020), MID CITY have amplified their presence on radio and on radars of Australian and UK/European media.
Supported extensively by the likes of triple j, Double J and BBC Radio 1, MID CITY have solidified their positioning as a band people keep on discovering and flocking to. To date, MID CITY’s streams exceed 5.5 million on Spotify alone (including a slew of editorial playlist placements like Australian Viral 50 (#35), German Viral 50 (#41), All New Rock, Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds Rock (AU/NZ), Local Noise (AU), Rock Rotation (GER), New Noise (USA), New Music Friday (AU/NZ) and Volume (UK)).
