Naarm-based artist Paige Barnard brings forth her newest sombre pop ballad Strong and its music video, both packed with a dreamy yearning.
With a powerful voice that gleams and the ability to weave songs made of pure feeling, Paige Barnard has gathered attention from all corners, from the likes of Triple J Unearthed, The Music, and MILKY, and receiving accolades like the Darebin Songwriters Judges Award 2020 and Recipient of AIR Women in Music Mentor Program.
Her latest single, Strong, is the perfect picture of her signature style, with heavy chorded piano setting the base for her steady, rich vocals. Showing an incredible range, Barnard’s unparalleled passion spills over into the listener, creating a personal, intimate soundscape.
Strong is a heart-wrenching emotional geyser, a ballad built from post-breakup emotion, exploring the ways that one is haunted by the ghosts of relationships past. Real and raw, it showcases the strength and vulnerability it can take to let go of the dreams built from that relationship and dream new dreams alone. Barnard speaks on the meaning behind the track: “I was really struggling to heal and move on from this relationship because nothing really went wrong, it was more the long distance that we couldn’t manage and commit to and so I felt quite rejected at the same time. So this song was really cathartic for me to write and it ended up being the last song I actually wrote about this breakup, and there was a lot!”
Shot on film, the music video is a hazy and nostalgic dream, showing Paige bathed in sunlight, by the ocean, and amongst flowers, always alone, with the layered imagery making it seem like she’s her own companion. Filmed by Josie Wappet and edited by Eimhin Healy, the clip is a perfect accompaniment to this stunning track.
